It is of no surprise that Tom Ascol's resolution pertaining to integrity in church membership did not get passed at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting in San Antonio, for if it did, that would ruin the amazing number of baptisms from the SBC's largest churches. Pastors wouldn't be able to brag on themselves so Tom Ascol's resolution is most definitely not popular among the majority of Southern Baptists. But please...somebody please tell me why the Southern Baptist Convention that is supposedly concerned with the body of Christ and the kingdom of God....somebody please tell me why we would pass a resolution on global warming and not on integrity in church membership. To me, that is utter foolishness. Why do we care more about global warming than the purity and the holiness of the church? Somebody doesn't have their priorities right. Perhaps it would pass if the resolution didn't come from a Calvinist. Or perhaps the resolution would pass if it was presented by a guy who has had hundreds of baptisms each year for the past decade and serves on some SBC committee. This just doesn't make since.

Don't you know Josh? It's not integrity in membership we are worried about: Calvinists, winebibbers, "private prayer languages", and global warming are the top 4 things that will bring down the SBC unless we do something about it RIGHT NOW!!!
I read on of the news articles on SBC.net. The leadership is so hung up on baptism numbers till it's just sickening...

I also am disgusted by the actions of the SBC on this issue. Ascol's resolution should have been passed with a 100% in favor vote. I suppose it is just symptomatic of what the priorities are of the big churches in the SBC.
I've heard that the primary argument against the resolution was that it infringes upon the autonomy of the local church. However, if that same logic is used, then almost any resolution passed is an infringement on local church autonomy. The reality is that the big churches don't want to admit that their active membership is probably about 30% of what they claim.
I hope Ascol keeps bringing this up. Maybe it will pass in 2009 when the convention is held in Louisville.

Eric....I will be there when it is here in Louisville. They will be on Calvinist ground so perhaps it will pass then.
