Rhett, dude, as a small business owner you're not thinkin' rightly here.

I mean, what a perfect place to advertize your whips, man!

Break out the bullwhip link, buddy!

I thought about it, but I decided not to...

Anyone who wants to know what Gordan is refering to can type "bullwhip" and "Rhett Kelley" into google and keep in mind that my website is in need of updating in the worst kind of way! :)

Todd Friel's is good too.

Joshua,

If you want to get really depressed, browse through the comments that have been left under Friel's videos at YouTube. Yikes.

If this guy intends for his video to be a "let's take your attitude to its logical conclusion" type of rhetoric against Rob Bell, I am afraid he has misunderstood Rob Bell, and is not familiar enough with Rob Bell's convictions.

How has he misunderstood Rob Bell? What are his convictions?
(So I won't make the same mistake)

Rhett,

I'm glad you asked.

Rob Bell doesn't believe we should never say offensive things; or even that we should never warn people of God's judgment. The satire "The Bullwhip Guy" was intended to be a shot at this very notion, as if Rob Bell was oblivious to the idea that the gospel itself can be offensive, and that Christians often must speak out against the culture. Therefore, the satire battles a straw man, and misunderstands the spirit of Bell's pnooma video about the Bullhorn guy. But this sort of misunderstanding about the emerging/emergent guys is typical, so I am not surprised.

I wonder if the guy who did this video called Rob Bell to make sure his understanding of Bell's position was legit before he made the satirical video.

These sort of things add unnecessary fuel to an already divided evangelicalism, is uncharitable and divisive. It further distorts people like Bell, and makes guys like him an "enemy" instead of a "brother" (who may have some views most evangelicals disagree with).

Glad to see that you desire not to make the same mistake. Of course, if you can give me some quotes from Bell's writings IN CONTEXT that clearly show that he believes that the church should never speak out against sin, warn people of God's judgment, etc. then I could graciously conclude that all this rhetoric was needed, but as it stands (cf. with the post "What's Wrong with the Emerging Church" on this blog), I am convinced that the evil guys known as heretics and non-Christians who are out to relativise all truth who go by the names Robb and Brian simply don't exist. They are straw men. It's easier to condemn people from afar based on a theological paranoia than it is to read their writings and try to understand what they actually mean by what they say, and to carefully distinguish bad theology from a non-Christian theology.

Bradley,

I appreciate your reply.

So, I take it you are well versed in the writings of these individuals? Are you part of that movement?

Bradley,

I see you addressed my questions on the other thread. I'll take it up there...

Thanks!

I wonder if Rob Bell consulted the Bullhorn guy before satirizing him? :)

The essential mistake that the modern church makes, and Bell does here, is that "results dictate method"...

Don't think it's working to stand in a crowded street and speak repentance and judgment on the crowd?

Then you're not gonna like several of the biblical prophets!

Dump John the Baptist! Dump Jeremiah!

Preaching the gospel outdoors, in a crowded area, and preaching repentance and judgment, is not only biblical in nature, but this is the way that the gospel has been communicated throughout church history...

The fact that nobody is stopping to take one of the pamphlets as RB puts it, is completely beside the point...we are to preach it, God is responsible for who takes a pamphlet...
